Statement from the Board of the Teleperformance Workers’ Union (SETEP) regarding the infrastructure issue at the Moschato facilities in Piraeus Street, in consultation with members of the Health and Safety committee and following reports from colleagues working in the Moschato buildings, who have repeatedly raised the serious issues existing in this specific area.
1) More specifically, there are issues regarding colleagues’ access to and exit from the premises, as the sidewalks on Piraeus Street are in poor condition. As a result, many colleagues either cross the street outside of crosswalks or are forced to walk on the roadway, as there are large potholes, and their access is also obstructed by vehicles parked at the adjacent car dealership. Meanwhile, the busy intersection at the entrance to Moschato poses an extremely dangerous situation for our colleagues, given the lack of any substantial safety measures provided for pedestrian crossings.
2) Furthermore, the issue of inadequate lighting has been repeatedly raised concerning all sidewalks and streets leading to the tram station, as well as on the overpasses crossing the tram tracks that lead to the Moschato side.
3) Furthermore, there are significant problems caused by the lack of flood control measures on Thessaloniki Street, which lead to serious safety concerns for our colleagues, as all the surrounding streets in the wider area flood.
TP Management has submitted requests to the municipal authorities to resolve the above issues, but they are passing the buck to the regional government as the responsible party. However, it is certainly the municipality’s responsibility to secure the necessary funding from the regional government so that the projects can be carried out.
For at least ten years now that Teleperformance has been on Piraeus Street, the municipal government has done absolutely nothing about any of this. Every time it rains, we’re flooded and can’t get home because Piraeus and Thessaloniki Streets turn into canals instead of roads. Every day we feel like we’re playing some sick video game with cars targeting us.
Our safety is not a cost. We will not gamble with our lives so that money can be given to private individuals and contractors who are getting rich while residents lack even the basics.
We call on the unions, associations, and organizations in the area to join us in a protest rally at the Municipal Council of the Municipality of Moschato-Tavros. To demand that immediate action be taken.
We demand:
- Immediate measures for the repair and reconstruction of the sidewalks on Piraeus, Thessaloniki, and surrounding streets.
- Immediate improvement of lighting in the surrounding area and at the street level crossings for the tram.
- A solution must be found to ensure safe crossing of Piraeus Street to and from the company, via an underpass, overpass, or pedestrian traffic light.
- The necessary flood prevention work on Thessaloniki Street must be completed immediately.
- Funding for projects essential to the protection and safety of the lives of the municipality’s residents and workers.
Our lives are not a cost!
